Getting assessed in Nanaimo
For adults in Nanaimo, the public route into ADHD-related assessment or broader mental health care usually starts with a family physician or nurse practitioner, or with Island Health’s Nanaimo Mental Health & Substance Use intake service, which offers screening, assessment and referral to the most appropriate service or community resource. MSP covers medically required physician services in British Columbia, including specialist physician care such as psychiatry when accessed within the public system, but official pages reviewed here do not give Nanaimo-specific adult ADHD wait times, so coverage does not mean quick access. A private virtual assessment fits outside that public pathway as a self-pay option for adults who want an assessment by video, while in-person hospital and crisis services in Nanaimo remain important if someone needs urgent, complex or hands-on assessment.
British Columbia uses province-wide prescription systems that matter for stimulant and other higher-risk prescribing: PharmaNet records dispensing information at B.C. community pharmacies, the College of Pharmacists of BC’s Controlled Prescription Program applies special requirements to certain controlled drugs, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC runs a Prescription Review Program based on PharmaNet data. For a Nanaimo resident using a virtual clinician, the practical handoff to a local pharmacy depends on the prescribing workflow and the pharmacy’s systems: B.C. guidance says an authorised prescription can be sent into PharmaNet and become visible to authorised care providers, but if the pharmacy does not have the needed ePrescribing functionality, the prescription is dispensed using the paper prescription the patient presents.

FAQ
A Nanaimo resident has a few verified public entry points. Island Health says Nanaimo Mental Health & Substance Use is the single access point for adults seeking mental health and substance use services in Nanaimo and surrounding areas, and it accepts self-referral by calling the intake assessment team at Brooks Landing. HealthLink BC also says B.C. residents can call 8-1-1 for personalised assistance and navigation. If you already have a family physician or nurse practitioner, they can still be a practical first stop for medical history, rule-outs and referral into physician or specialist care.
Yes. Island Health has a Nanaimo-specific adult intake service rather than requiring everyone to start in hospital. The Nanaimo Mental Health & Substance Use page says it provides screening and assessment, referrals to the most appropriate service, team or community resource, and connection to services such as counselling, group therapy and detox information. Its listed address is 203-2000 Island Highway North in Nanaimo. Hospital care is still there for urgent situations, but the intake service is the routine community entry point described on the official Island Health page.
For urgent mental health concerns, Island Health lists Nanaimo Regional General Hospital as a hospital with dedicated Mental Health and Substance Use services and as one of the Island Health sites with Psychiatric Emergency Services for people aged 17 and over. For non-emergency community care, Island Health’s Nanaimo Mental Health & Substance Use service offers local screening, assessment and referral. The same emergency and hospital care page also lists other regional hospital sites with acute psychiatric services, including Cowichan District Hospital and North Island Hospital Comox Valley Campus, but whether those are appropriate depends on your clinical situation and referral needs.
Vancouver Island University’s Accessibility Services Office says it provides information, support services and reasonable accommodation to students with documented permanent and temporary disabilities, and it explicitly lists ADHD among the conditions it supports. The Nanaimo campus contact information on the university’s student services page includes AccessibilityServices@viu.ca and 250-740-6446. Because university accommodation processes are separate from medical treatment, students usually need to register with the accessibility office and follow its documentation requirements, even if clinical care is happening through a community doctor, nurse practitioner or virtual service.
Bring identification, your BC personal health details if available, and a clear summary of your health history, current concerns and prior mental health care. This matters in B.C. because provincial prescribing and dispensing systems rely on correct patient identity and pharmacy records: the province states a client’s PHN is required to process a prescription in PharmaNet, and authorised practitioners can review medication history through that system for safe care. If you may later seek campus accommodations at VIU or another institution, it is also sensible to check that school’s accessibility office requirements in advance so you know what documentation format they expect.
