ADHD Therapy Outside Ontario

A plain answer: therapy sessions with Finding Focus can only be provided while you are physically in Ontario. Assessment, diagnosis and ongoing ADHD care remain available in every province the clinic serves. Here is what to do if you live elsewhere.

Therapy is not available in Quebec, the territories, or outside Canada. If you are in crisis anywhere in Canada, call or text 9-8-8, or call 911.

Regulated health professionals in Canada are licensed by province. A therapist may provide a session only while you are physically in a province where they are authorized to practise and that Finding Focus has activated for them. For therapy at Finding Focus that is Ontario today. It is why you confirm your location before every session and why a session is rescheduled, not held, if you turn out to be in Alberta for the week or at a cottage across the border. If therapy becomes available in another province, this page will change.

The clinical side of Finding Focus is not affected. If you live in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island, you can still book an online ADHD assessment with a licensed clinician, receive a diagnosis where the assessment supports one, and continue with ongoing treatment including medication management through your portal. Your clinician can also discuss therapy options with you as part of your treatment plan, and can refer where appropriate.

For therapy itself, there are established routes in every province. Your extended health plan's provider search lists therapists whose services it reimburses. Your employer's employee assistance program, if you have one, usually offers short-term counselling at no cost. Post-secondary students can use their institution's counselling service. Each province's regulatory college for social workers and for psychologists keeps a public register, and CADDAC, the Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada, maintains a resource directory. Your provincial health line, 811 in most provinces, can point you to publicly funded mental health services. When you contact a therapist, ask directly what experience they have with adult ADHD and whether they use a structured, skills-based approach.

Why the line is where it is

Licensing is provincial. Your therapist must be authorized in the province you are in at session time. It is a legal boundary, not a policy choice, and it protects you as much as the therapist.

What does not change

Assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and medication management with licensed clinicians remain available in every province Finding Focus serves, from the same portal.

How it works

1

Check your plan's provider search

Most insurers list therapists whose services they reimburse. Filter for social workers, psychologists or registered psychotherapists depending on what your plan covers.

2

Ask about ADHD specifically

Ask any prospective therapist what they do differently for adult ADHD. Structured, skills-based work with between-session practice is what to listen for.

3

Use what is free first

Employee assistance programs and campus counselling often provide several sessions at no cost, which is enough to test whether the approach fits.

4

Keep your ADHD care in one place

Whoever you see for therapy, your Finding Focus clinician continues to manage assessment and treatment. Tell them who you are working with so care stays joined up.

Care in your province

Frequently asked questions

Only while you are in Ontario at the session time. If you are away, tell your therapist and reschedule for when you are back. This applies to short trips as well as long ones.

No. Therapy sessions are not available to people located in Quebec, in the territories, or outside Canada, and Finding Focus does not currently serve Quebec for assessment either.

Possibly. Therapy can be activated for a province where a therapist is authorized to practise. If that happens for your province, this page and the therapy hub will say so. Nothing is promised until it is live.

Your clinician can discuss therapy and coaching as part of your treatment plan and may suggest routes or make referrals where appropriate. They cannot guarantee availability or cost with an outside provider.

Ask what proportion of their adult clients have ADHD, whether they use a structured approach such as CBT adapted for ADHD or skills-based coaching, and how they handle between-session practice. Ask too whether their receipts carry a designation your plan reimburses.
