Therapy Fees, Receipts and Insurance

Sessions from $149, paid one at a time, with no membership. Your receipt carries the Registered Social Worker designation and registration number that extended health plans ask for. Here is how to find out what your plan will do with it before you book.

Whether a plan reimburses is always the plan's decision. Nothing on this page is a promise of coverage. If you need help now, call or text 9-8-8, or call 911.

Therapy sessions are paid individually and in advance, and they do not renew. There is no membership, no package and no minimum. The fee shown at checkout is the total amount charged and includes any applicable tax. Psychotherapy provided by a Registered Social Worker is an exempt supply for GST/HST purposes; a session sold as coaching may be taxable, which is one reason the two tracks can show different totals at checkout.

Your receipt is written for a benefits claim. It shows the provider's name, the Registered Social Worker designation and the registration number with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, the date, the service, and the amount paid. In Ontario, social worker psychotherapy is usually claimed under the paramedical or mental health benefit of an extended health plan. Some insurers list social workers as a covered mental health practitioner on their standard plans; others cover them only if your employer chose that option. The plan document, not the receipt, decides.

Before you book, find your benefits booklet or log in to your insurer's portal and check three things: whether social workers or registered social workers are listed as an eligible practitioner; whether psychotherapy or counselling is a covered service; and the annual maximum and any per-visit limit. If the booklet is unclear, call the number on your benefits card and ask exactly that. If therapy is not reimbursed, the Canada Revenue Agency's medical expense tax credit may apply to psychotherapy from an authorized practitioner; keep your receipts and check the CRA's list for Ontario.

Per session, in advance

Sessions are $149 and up and are paid one at a time. Nothing renews. The checkout total is the total: it already includes any tax that applies to that session type.

Provider, RSW designation, college registration number, date, service and amount. If your plan covers social worker psychotherapy, this is the information the claim form asks for.

Check your plan in three questions

Is a Registered Social Worker an eligible practitioner? Is psychotherapy a covered service? What is the annual maximum? Your insurer's portal or the number on your card answers all three.

How it works

1

Find the practitioner list

In your benefits booklet or insurer portal, look for the extended health, paramedical or mental health section and its list of eligible practitioners. You are looking for social worker, registered social worker or, on some plans, a general mental health practitioner category.

2

Confirm the service and the maximum

Check that psychotherapy or counselling is covered, and note the annual dollar maximum and any per-visit cap. Some plans pool several practitioner types under one maximum.

3

Book and pay

Pay for the session at booking. Your receipt is available in the portal after the session with the details a claim needs.

4

Submit the claim

Submit the receipt through your insurer's app or portal. If a plan covers social work services but questions psychotherapy by a social worker, the College has published guidance for insurers that you can point to.

Sessions from $149

CBT and ADHD coaching sessions are both 50 minutes. Psychotherapy from a Registered Social Worker is GST/HST-exempt; a session booked as coaching may be taxable. Coaching is usually not reimbursed by extended health plans. Rescheduling terms are shown at booking.

Frequently asked questions

Often, but not always. Many Ontario extended health plans reimburse psychotherapy or counselling from a Registered Social Worker under a paramedical or mental health benefit, and some insurers include social workers on their standard plans. Other plans cover only psychologists, or only the practitioners your employer selected. Check your booklet or call your insurer before you book.

Usually not. Coaching is not a regulated health service, so most extended health plans do not reimburse it even when the same provider's psychotherapy is covered. A health spending account may allow it depending on its rules. If reimbursement is important to you, the CBT track is the one to ask your insurer about.

Psychotherapy provided by a Registered Social Worker is exempt from GST/HST. A session sold as coaching may be taxable. The fee displayed at checkout is always the total you are charged for that session.

The federal medical expense tax credit can apply to amounts paid to an authorized medical practitioner, and the Canada Revenue Agency publishes a province-by-province list of who qualifies. Check the Ontario entries for social workers or psychotherapists, keep your receipts, and note that amounts reimbursed by insurance cannot be claimed again.

Employee assistance programs usually provide their own short-term counselling through their own providers rather than reimbursing outside sessions. Some will reimburse an external provider; ask your program directly. Therapy at Finding Focus is paid at booking regardless, so you would claim afterwards.
